A quilter is the name given to someone who works at quilting. Quilting is usually done with three layers, the quilt top, batting and backing material. “Paper” quilting was used during American pioneer days. Hand quilting and machine quilting are the more widely used methods. Hand quilting uses a running stitch by hand to sew your thread across the entire quilt. A quilting hoop or frame is used to hold the pieces being quilted. Hand quilting is enjoying a resurgence today and especially well done by the Amish. The pieces of the pattern are put together with the sewing machine before quilting. Quilters may use multicolored or metallic threads to add to the richness of the quilting design.

Your quilting stitches can be either done in decorative patterns or straight lines. Quilting serves three purposes: 1) to hold all three layers of fabric together, 2 ) to add design and beauty to the finished product, and 3) to trap air in the layers to make the finished quilt much warmer than just the three pieces of fabric would be. Quilters usually start quilting from the middle and working out to the edges. Quilting can use decorative stiches in complex designs and patterns. Quilting is often combined with embroidery, patchwork, applique and other forms of needlework.

Traditional quilting is a six-step process that includes: 1) selecting a pattern, fabrics and batting; 2) measuring and cutting fabrics to the correct size to make blocks from the pattern; 3) piecing (sewing cut pieces of fabric together using a sewing machine or by hand to make blocks) blocks together to make a finished “top”; 4) layering the quilt top with batting and backing, to make a “quilt sandwich”; 5) quilting by hand or machine through all layers of the quilt sandwich; and 6) squaring up and trimming excess batting from the edges, machine sewing the binding to the front edges of the quilt and then hand-stitching the binding to the quilt backing.

You can fold fat quarters into triangles and bundle them to create stacked stars before giving them as gifts. Once your have learned the basics of quilting; you can create the quilt of your dreams. First, you may need to know the simple way to select the quilting fabrics that you want. Make sure that the fabric is color safe, so the color won’t run when you put the quilt in the wash. If you are not quite sure if the fabric is color safe, you should wash it first before you start to stitch with it; be sure to place it in the washing machine by itself, so that if it does run, it will not ruin the remainder of your clothes. It is also a brilliant idea to be sure that quilting fabrics have a weave that’s tight enough, so that your bedding will last for years .

If the fabric is not threaded tightly enough, it will be easier for your quilt to rip or tear. Although you may want to try different fabrics for your log cabin quilts each once in a while, you will not be ready to go inaccurate if you use 100 percent cotton; if you’re a beginner when it pertains to picking quilting fabrics, it’s best to stay with cotton till you are far more acquainted with the quilting process.

If you’re using quilting fabrics that do not have a design, it is important to make certain that you cut your parts the same so that when you sew the parts of your quilt together, everything will fit correctly . The mounting material is also significant when it comes to quilting fabrics. After you have all the material cut out properly, you will have to make sure that the backing material is around the same weight and color as the pinnacle of the quilt so that you can sew through the entire quilt evenly without any rips or bumps.

Since you have found my site, I am so pleased that you are here.  When I first started making my keepsake quilts for my family, I never quite seemed to get the edging on right.  Or something else just wasn’t right.  I had no idea that someone or rather “some machine” was out there and someone that owned that machine could help me get the exact perfect finishes I was looking for.  That’s when I started my research and ended up composing this blog for you so you wouldn’t miss out on something that is terrific.

Somewhere in that timeframe, I looked into purchasing one.  After doing my research on them, I decided that using a service is much more economical for me.  They are quite expensive machines!  Since people in the past relied on quilting bees to produce finished quilts, I needed to find some other method because buying that machine was not an option for me.

One thing that I have just finished doing, which was a first for me, is I sent a design to my quilting service.  She is making a quilt top from my design on her longarm quilters.  I sent the design, which is unique only to my family, and it will be ready for pick up before my husband’s birthday!  I am so excited about it!  My quilting service is going to do the whole thing, but I made the design!  I never could have made a quilt like that doing it the old fashioned way.  That’s not to say I have given up making homemade, hand quilting services of my own.  No, never, I love it too much.

The best thing about finding my longarm quilting service is that now I have so many more options to add to my hobby.I am going to assemble another one that will not be a knock off of anything I’ve ever done before.

Brief History about Embroidery

 The earliest embroidery was done by hand, following which the process became mechanized with the use of the mechanical  embroidery machine . A sewing machine with or without built-in stitches can be used to "manually" create  embroidery designs on fabric . These manual types of embroidery machines are used very little these days, and mostly for fiber art and quilting projects. This type of embroidery is used to embellish garments, though with decreasing frequency these days. Replacing it is the free machine embroidery process, often called "thread drawing or painting", which is favored by quilters and fabric artists to embellish or to create samples of textile art. Machine embroidery designs are great to use for anything.  However, it is the computerized embroidery sewing machines that have revolutionized the market. They can be used by inputting a pattern, however complicated or intricate it may be, into the machine and getting its exact replica on  fabric . These embroidery sewing machines contain a special software that reads digitized embroidery files. They are extremely popular among professionals, crafters, quilters, and seamstresses, owing to their precision and convenience. They are widely used even by those who enjoy embroidery as a hobby.

The best machines have facilities for both embroidery and sewing. Some of the high-end models come with an inbuilt large color touchscreen, a USB interface, design editing software on the machine, embroidery adviser software, and design file storage system. The embroidery sewing machine prices range from $400 up to the expensive ones costing $2000. Brands that sell this product are Brother, Singer, JAMAC Kenmore and Shark. While using a computerized sewing machine, one needs to follow these steps to create a design in thread.

1. The first step is for one to buy or create a digitized embroidery design file. Plenty of design files are available for purchase, as well as those that can be downloaded. Ensure that the designs you buy or download are compatible with your machine. If you have a design in a different format than that which your machine uses, you could convert it using a conversion software. However, if you have your heart set on a specific unusual pattern, you may have to create it. Out of those that are available, you may want to incorporate some changes or combine one, two or even three designs, using an editing software. It will enable you to rotate, scale, move, stretch, distort, split, crop, or duplicate the pattern. Many softwares also enable one to add text and change colors.
2. Once you have settled on the design you want to use, load the file into the embroidery sewing machine. Transferring can be done through cables, CDs, floppy disks, USB interfaces, or special cards that resemble flash and compact cards.
3. The next step is to secure the fabric. This needs to be done to ensure neatness and prevent wrinkles in the material and other problems. Where small embroidery designs are being made, the material is hooped, and the hoop is attached to the machine. The machine automatically positions it under the needle. In large designs, one or more pieces of material (such as vinyl, nylon or open mesh), called "stabilizers" or "interfacing" are added under and/or on top of the fabric.
4. The last and most enjoyable step is to start and watch the machine work its magic. Depending on your machine, you may be required to change threads or cut them.

While deciding which embroidery sewing machine to buy, consider models that are long-lasting and require minimum maintenance. Other qualities to take into consideration are versatility and easy switchover from embroidery to regular stitching functions.
