    Why spend money when you make your own decorations this Halloween!

    We’re all cutting back our spending to just the necessities, but that doesn’t mean your house has to be boring and uninviting this Halloween, with these cheap and simple to make home decorations.

    Below I give you instructions for making a Halloween tablecloth and trick or treat bags with pumpkin face cut outs and the word “BOO”, but use your imagination – the templates can be used on all sorts of things, like cushion covers, curtains, placemats, napkins – the list is endless!

    Fabric & Notions

    Basic Instructions:

    For the tablecloth, first you need to measure the length and width of your table. If you have a table that extends, extend it first before measuring. You then need to add on an allowance for draping over the side.

    Now this is a purely personal preference. Some people like tablecloths that drape almost to the floor, other like theirs much shorter. My general rule of thumb is to add on the amount of the drop to your chair seat.

    You measure that by placing the top of your measuring tape level with the top of your table, and then measure down until you hit the seat of the chair. For me, it’s 10′ (or 27cm).

    Now don’t forget, you need to add that on for each side, plus a seam allowance. Although a normal seam allowance is 5/8″, I usually allow for a larger seam for a tablecloth as we are going to machine stitch it. I always allow “.

    So, if your table is 5ft by 4ft then you’ll need:

    Length: 60′ PLUS 21′ (drop at each end) PLUS 1′ (2 seam allowances) – 82′

    Width: 48′ PLUS 21′ (drop at each end) PLUS 1′ (2 seam allowances) – 70′

    Or, in metric

    Length: 160cm PLUS 54cm (drop at each end) PLUS 4cm (2 seam allowances) – 218cm

    Width: 122cm PLUS 54cm (drop at each end) PLUS 4cm (2 seam allowances) – 180cm

    For each trick or treat bag, you will need 2 pieces of fabric 10″ by 12″ (or 26cm by 31cm). So if you have 3 children, you’ll need 30″ by 24″ (or 78cm by 62cm).

    You’ll also need some drawstring for the trick or treat bags – say 30″ (or 76cm) per bag.

    As it’s Halloween, try to find a nice bright orange fabric for the tablecloth and bags and black for the cut outs! Or you could go gothic, and buy black (but make sure your cut outs are then in bright orange or white).

    The Cut Outs

    For the cut outs, the amount of fabric depends on how many you want to place on your tablecloth. Each pumpkin cut out measures 7″ by 7″ (17cm by 19cm) – so if you want to put 8 pumpkins on your tablecloth, you’ll need 28″ by 15″ (or 68cm by 38cm). The BOO cut outs measure 2″ by 5″ (13cm by 5cm) so if you want to put 16 BOOs on your tablecloth you’ll need 22″ by 8″ (or 54cm by 20cm). And I’d recommend one pumpkin and one BOO for each side of the bag. Or you could just buy a yard of fabric and cut out as many as you can!

    To Make Up

    Mark out your tablecloth using tailors chalk or pins, and cut out. Mark out the rectangles for your trick or treat bags and cut out.

    Now pin a ” hem around the entire border of your tablecloth and sew.

    Place the two pieces of bag with right sides together, and pin the two side seams and the bottom. Sew around in one continuous line. Now turn over half an inch on the top and sew. (Note: if you plan to machine stitch the Halloween cut outs on, then do these before doing the side seams). We now need to turn over the sewn top hem another inch – make sure to leave enough room for the drawstring to be threaded through. Sew in place, but remember to leave a small opening to thread through the drawstring. Thread through and knot each end to secure.

    Now pin and cut out the number of  halloween cut outs that you need.

    These can be attached a number of ways – with iron on hemming tape, craft glue suitable for fabrics, hand stitching, or machine stitching.

    So that’s it – two very simple, but cheap, Halloween decorations to brighten up your home.

    After years of making lots of mistakes sewing window treatments… I’ve learned a few tricks of the trade.

    Listed below are 11 powerful sewing tips that you can apply to any sewing project… to help you save time… avoid frustration… and hopefully help you become more successful with your projects. I’ll explain many of these techniques in terms of window treatments, but these apply to all sewing projects.

    Amazing Sewing: Avoid puckers with long stitches

    One of the most frustrating moments when sewing seams is the very nice fabric you bought for your project is puckering as you sew. Argh! (no, I’m not a pirate for Halloween). Anyhoos, the reason your fabric puckers is because your machine is feeding the fabric too fast under your pesser foot… thus causing your fabric to almost gather at times and the needle stitches over a fold in the fabric. The best way to avoid this is to set your machines stitch length to as long as it will go. This will move the fabric through at the same rate, but your needle isn’t moving as fast. I’ve found that this adjustment alone has made all the difference when sewing my seams… or sewing across a panel.

    When in doubt, make some test samples. Cut out strips of fabric and lining… mimic whatever it is that you will actually sew… and test out your stitch settings. This is the only fool proof way to ensure your stitching is just right for your particular project.

    Amazing Sewing : Put the pressure on… make your ironing board your new best friend.

    You should be pressing your fabric at all stages of your sewing project. This may become tedious… but the habit of pressing will result in a truly professional looking window treatment. Press your fabric well after you have cut it and before you start sewing. You can’t sew good seams if your fabric is creased and wrinkled.

    After you’ve sewn your seams, press them open. There are times when you’ll need to press them to the side, like when sewing the sides seams for a lined drapery panel or roman shade. But pressing the seams before you turn things right side out will make your life a whole lot easier. Otherwise, you’ll be fighting with the seam… because it won’t lay all in the same direction within your sewn panel.

    Press your panel once it is right sides out. This will give the edges of your panel a crisp clean look.And press one more time before you hang your window treatments. Press, press and press!!

    Amazing Sewing : Get more done by working in time chunks

    If you’re like me, you have a life outside of your sewing projects. Well… unless you do this for a living… then well… good for you!! But, like the rest of us, it’s difficult to find time to make my roman shades or to finish those lined curtains. In fact, if I can’t find the time, then I’ll just put it aside until I do… and who knows when that will be.

    I’ve found that breaking my sewing projects down into doable chunks makes my projects easier to manage.

    For example, I know that cutting my fabric takes up most of my time. And it requires most of my attention. So, I’ll block off an hour or 2 a night to finish cutting all the fabric. Even if I get just one panel cut… that’s more than nothing done.

    Then, I’ll move on to side seams. I dedicate a half hour to an hour a night sewing side seams. Again, even if you just sew one drapery panel… that’s one more thing done.

    Other chunks of time may include bottom hems, preparing drapery headings, marking for roman shade rings and installation.

    Try not to get overwhelmed with the big picture, because it is so easy to get discouraged and not do it at all. Break it down into manageable chunks and take it one step at a time.

    Amazing Sewing: Square fabric

    When cutting your fabric, it is critical that you square your edges. This means that the top and bottom edges should be at 90 degrees to your side edges. Putting special attention to this will save you so much time when you’re sewing your side seams and bottom hem. Nothing’s worse than finishing your roman shade only to discover that the shade hangs crooked because the fabric wasn’t square. Or your drapery panel hangs too low on one end.. hitting the floor. Ugh.Take the time…. square your fabric when you cut it.

    Amazing Sewing: Add fullness and insulation with interlining

    Interlining your window treatments adds fullness and body… especially when working with silk or thinner fabrics. Lining alone just doesn’t add the level of professionalism as does interlining.

    Interlining is a thin flannel layer that you lay in between the face fabric and lining. It doesn’t look like much, but when it’s all sewn your window treatments will look softer, fuller and feel just wonderful. Plus… that added layer will help insulate your windows.

    Amazing Sewing : Less seam is more

    I am not a perfect sewer… are you? No matter how hard I try… I never got my seams to be exactly 1/2″ or whatever the instructions call for. In fact, many times my sewn panels come up about 1/8″ short. And this drives me crazy. In most cases, this shouldn’t matter. But when making roman shades… it matters. Plus, when sewing, the fabric takes up… maybe more than expected. And this also makes things shorter.

    So… I’ve learned to sew just inside the seam line. Or the imaginary seam line. If you plan on sewing a 1/2″ seam… pretend there’s a line drawn there and sew just to the inside of that line. I’ve had great success with this little trick!

    Amazing Sewing: Overbuy fabric

    More is definitely more in this case. Always, if you can afford it, buy at least an extra yard of your fabric. There are so many times where I thought I needed 12 yards… and then realized I shouldn’t bought 15 yards! So, to be safe, buy more fabric than you need. Plus, you can always use the extra to make decorative pillows to decorate your room.

    Amazing Sewing: Quality lining

    Don’t cheap yourself on lining. You don’t need crazy expensive lining, but you should choose a lining that drapes nicely… has a nice finish… and just feels nice. Avoid the cheap, paper thin cotton linings. It pretty much defeats the purpose of lining when you go this thin. And don’t forget your option of blackout lining. This is thicker… but provides excellent light control.

    Amazing Sewing: Explore tools

    Before jumping into making a roman shade or sewing a pleated drape, be sure to check out the tools available to you. For example, if you’re planning on sewing pleated drapes, you may discover that some nice triple pinch pleat tape is well worth the investment… to save you lots of time! Or maybe some 4 prong hooks and deep pleat tape.

    Or you’re going to make a slatted roman shade. Well, you’ll discover that you don’t need to sew all those casings and rings.. you can just use roman shade rib loop tape… that only needs one row of stitching and gives you a casing and loops to thread your lift cord through. There’s all kinds of supplies available to you that will save you hours of work. So, look around first before diving in.

    Amazing Sewing: Avoid being dull… sharpen everything!

    When starting a new sewing project, make sure you have a new sharp needle for your sewing machine. I know this seems obvious, but I have pushed my needles to the limit… and all it does is cause the needles to break, jam the thread, drop stitches… yeah…. go put in a new needle.

    Make sure you have some nice sharpened fabric scissors. Or if you’re using a rotary cutter… go put in a new blade. Otherwise you’ll be sawing at your fabric… and that leads to ugly frayed edges.

    Amazing Sewing: Good instructions

    If this is the first time making a particular window treatment…. make sure you have GOOD and easy to understand instructions on hand. Nothing’s worse then getting a quarter of the way into your sewing project, and then hitting a brick wall… because you have no idea what to do next. So make sure your instructions have clear diagrams, lots of detailed steps… and maybe even videos to back them up.

    Sewing for beginners is pretty simple!

    When first learning to sew, you will read or have many people tell you to stick with cotton or cotton polyester blends for your beginning projects.

    You will read or have many people tell you to stick with cotton or cotton polyester for your beginning projects. I do agree that these are some of the easiest  fabrics  to work with. However, my girls thankfully removed my fear of working with other materials.

    When I first started sewing I tried to understand all of the differences between the fabrics: the fibers (natural vs. manmade), the fabrications (woven, knit, non woven)… After being overwhelmed, I stuck with cotton and polyester/cotton blends. Then my kids got involved in choosing their own fabrics and I threw all cares out the window. Anything shiny, see through, or furry were the most exciting to them. We also combined different fabrics, using anything and everything together in the same projects! (That last statement would make most professional seamstresses croak.)

    Through this we learned :

    What we did like working with, what was difficult and why, why some fabrics didn’t work well together, which fabrics needed special seams, some that we would prefer using a serger with…the list goes on. All the things that we could have read about, but we completely understood why through our hands on experiences. Again, barriers were broken down, and problem solving skills were sharpened. We noticed that certain needles worked better than others and we needed special seams for certain fabrics to deal with fraying… Although we still couldn’t name all of the different types of fabrics we recognized them by feel and look. We are just now starting to identify all of them by name.

    Just the other day my youngest daughter and I were looking for fabric for her Christmas presents. We picked up a beautiful linen fabric and she immediately was able to identify that it would not be good for her project because she needs to sew these pillows with the edges exposed. We had done a previous project with linen that had fallen apart over time from the stress on the seams.
    There are some excellent books that discuss all the types of fabric, as well as the special treatment they need. My favorite is Singer’s Complete Photo Guide to Sewing. It is an excellent beginners book .

    If you are wanting to stay with the easier fabrics, look for:

    1. Does it unravel easily. Look at the bottom edges of a bolt where the fabric has been cut. Is it coming apart real easy or staying together?2. For matching seams; solids and small prints are best.
    Fabrics are either Directional or Non directional. Directional fabrics or fabrics "with nap" – means that it either has a design that can only go in one direction, or the fabric looks lighter or darker depending on how you hold it. This type of fabric must be cut in a certain way so that both sides look the same (i.e., the design isn’t upside down). When working with directional fabrics you might have to buy extra to accommodate the design. *Don’t let this stop you from buying these fabrics. However, if you or your child are perfectionists I would steer away from plaids, starting off. Non directional or "without nap" – means that the design can be turned any way and it looks the same, or there is no design at all.
    3. Fabric that do not stretch alot. Some examples of "easy to work with" fabrics include: cotton, polyester cotton blends, denims, firm knits (not as much stretch), wools, broadcloths, poplin, flannel, sweatshirt knits, seersucker, calico…the list goes on. (When I first started, I would look at a list like this and say, "I don’t know what all these are – help". Remember, with you and your child’s first projects being small, you are not having to buy large quantities of fabric, so don’t feel limited. Look, feel, and experiment! )

    Three suggestions for finding fabric:

    1. Buy on sale only. There are great deals out there. *If you go into a fabric store, ask if they have a discount table. Internet sites will have a link to their discount fabrics .
    2. Use old clothes. My husband works on our family ranch and goes through clothes like crazy. We use his old shirts, jeans, and socks. My youngest daughter at 3 even used a pair of her old underwear, stitched the legs up, and made a hat for herself (she was only allowed to wear it in the house with family).
    3. Use other people’s old clothes. My grandmother was getting rid of a huge bag of clothing, so my girls asked if they could have them. We made the cutest quilts, headbands, and purses with her silky shirts.

    Very Important – Let your kids choose their fabrics – even if they don’t match and are ugly!!

    One more thing to consider: will what your making need to be washed often? Fabric is either washable or dry clean only. For the projects that we will wash a lot (our clothes, doll clothes, and some of our tote bags) we buy washable fabrics, due to the expense of dry cleaning.
    **You will be amazed at all of the beautiful faux fabrics available now, that are actually machine washable.

    Preparing fabric for sewing:

    *When buying fabric, look at the information on the care of the fabric (i.e., washing, dry cleaning, if it has been pre-shrunk, or if it will shrink). At stores this is found on the end of the bolt. When buying over the internet they post this info. for you. If the fabric has colors that might bleed, or if it states that it will shrink some when washed – wash it. A great habit to get into is, right when you get your fabric (if it is machine washable) wash it. We put ours in the wash to pre-shrink and we add a little vinegar to help set the colors. We then dry and press.

    This way your fabric is ready when you are ready to sew. I learned this the hard way. I made some precious 4th of July US flag quilted placemats. Although, I didn’t have to preshrink the fabric, we couldn’t use them to eat on because I didn’t set the colors. If I were to wash them now our white stripes would turn pink; we still use them to decorate with.
    Another example: Your child makes their first shirt, it fits perfect, you wash it, it shrinks, and they can’t wear it again! If it states that the fabric will shrink, take the time to wash it!

    Dry clean or machine washable?

    The important thing is to take into consideration what you are making. Will it need to be washed often? If yes, buy machine washable. We use a lot of dry cleanable upholstery fabrics for our pillows and purses. We also use this fabric for special dresses.

     From sewing hems to rolled hem sewing, you can learn it all with these sewing tips.


    Here are few of tips that I would like to share with you:

    1. Before discarding pants, cut off the belt loops and use to sew on the inside of children’s coats and jackets for a coat loop. No more fallen coats at school.

    2. Before sewing on buttons, tape each one where it belongs with a strip of transparent tape. After the first stitches are made you can remove the tape.

    3. To avoid pinholes when hemming delicate garments, mark the hemline with tailor’s chalk and use clips to hold the fold in place.

    4. Prevent future errors in sewing by slipping a memo into individual patterns explaining any size alterations or changes for that item.

    5. Prevent fraying by reinforcing the hems with a row of zigzag stitching in a matching or contrasting color.

    6. Sew a large button on each end of the drawstring on pajamas and sweat suits. This will keep the string from disappearing.

    7. Keep a spool of clear nylon thread on hand. Because it is transparent it will pick up the color of the fabric. This will also work when a bobbin runs out and the spool is almost empty; just put the clear thread on your bobbin.

    8. Place a thin sheet of foam rubber under your sewing machine’s foot pedal to prevent it from sliding around when you use it on an uncarpeted surface.

    9. Store a magnet in your sewing basket to attract loose pins and attach one to your  sewing machine  to hold extra needles. If you glue a small magnet to the end of a wooden yardstick you won’t have to bend over to pick up any pins that fall on the floor. 

    10. Thoroughly washed and cleaned mascara brushes can be used to clean the crevices of your sewing machine.

    11. When letting down a garment hem you can diminish the crease by applying white vinegar to the wrong side of the fabric

    12. Try this economical substitute for custom-cut table pads: Place a quilted mattress cover over your table top and trim with scissors for a custom fit. You’ll have a sturdy, heat-absorbent table pad to protect the finish of your table.

    13. For a substitute needle threader: push the needle through a sheet of white paper,as it’s more noticeable.

    14. When shopping for accessories for a recent sewing project, staple a small fabric sample to an index card and carry it with you to the stores.

    15. To organize loose buttons: String them on twist ties and twist the ends together for an easy way to store them.

    When teaching your children to sew, there are things you can do with your sewing space that will make them more comfortable while they are sewing, and even better, help encourage a greater desire to sew. Give them little project to complete, let them explore their creativity. This a bit of information about sewing for kids.

    WHERE?
    Although we would all love to have our own sewing /craft room, most of us have to find a small corner in the house where we can sew. Through experience I have learned, that if you want to learn something, or more importantly you want your kids to learn something, the source needs to be readily available. Otherwise, "out of sight, out of mind".

    I started very early having "centers" around the house (primarily in the areas where we "lived" the most) for my girls. Some years we even gave up furniture in an area in order to have TOOLS for learning. A Reading center, Music center, Building center, Science center… If things were out (neatly organized, of course) and readily available, there was never a question that they would be used. 

    sewing tips sewing was no different . We started sewing in the laundry room, which when everything was set up – the table and machine, we couldn’t wash our clothes. So the girls were only sewing when I set aside the time for it, and it had to be put away immediately afterwards.

    When we moved to an area where it could stay out all of the time, the girls improved rapidly, as did I. Why? Because we could see it, we wanted to sew more often, and the girls didn’t have to always wait for me. **With my 3 year old, at the time, there were limitations.

    Added Bonus
    Moms, we rarely have a chunk of time where we can complete a whole project from start to finish. This set up is a huge advantage for us as well. I will see that I have 15 minutes to spare, and I can sit right down and sew several lines and then walk away!

    SEATING
    We’ve talked about where, now let’s talk about your child’s positioning. It’s very important that your kids are comfortable while they are sewing. It is also important that they are sitting high enough to look down on the needle and their hands. If they are older this is easy. If they are young, you have two choices for those little bodies.

    1. Buy a small child’s table.
    PROS: this is very comfortable for your child.
    CONS: if you are sharing machines, it isn’t real comfortable for you.

    If needed, use pillows to raise your child on the chair. For their feet, find a storage box to place the pedal on.

    PROS:you can use what you already have, and it is much easier to share the machine. 

    CONS: at first it may feel a little awkward if your kids are real little. When my 3 year old started sewing, she worked at a child’s table. This was because she never knew where to place the foot she wasn’t using, when she sat at the larger table. However, by age 6 she preferred being at the "big" table with us.
    Whichever one you choose, just make sure they are comfortable!

    3.Buy your child a childrens sewing machine  

    When you know and are surey are capable to work independently. Start giving them hand sewing projects and or just any sewing projects for kids, let their creativity shine out! 

    Kristi learned to sew right along with her daughters. The girls were age 3 and 6, at the time! Because it was such an enjoyable experience she wants to encourage others to pursue this endeavor.

    Kristi experienced the woes of feeling very ignorant just trying to read a pattern and was discouraged from trying to teach her girls on her own. After receiving a new sewing machine from her husband for her birthday, she became bound and determined to fulfill her desire to learn to sew.  childrens sewing machines
    Kristi’s plan was to learn everything before she tried to teach her kids. But as she was learning, her girls caught her enthusiasm and in amazement she watched them flourish in learning to sew right along with her. Kristi says that, "quite honestly, because we knew nothing I experienced a real freedom in my own education".

    At age 8 yrs. old, her younger daughter could sew her own dresses, and her older daughter, at 11 yrs. old, had a passion for sewing, and was a better seamstress than Kristi.

    What Kristi wants to do, is share her journey in sewing; to help others know (with hindsight being 20/20) that the best way to learn is by doing. She has shared with friends and family their way of learning to sew, as well as, the projects and patterns that built their skills. She has seen it not only work for others, but truly bring a delight into the sewing experience.

    Embroidery is like a picture that lightens up the room!embroidery thread

    There are new, modern and exciting things to be done and you can think of an imaginative way of embroidery. If you can imagine it, you can embroider it! For many years, ladies have been getting together to hand-embroider any number of items, from quilts to clothes to sheets to curtains and more.  This could be done with and embroidery stitches . Many people have come up with an imaginative way of embroidery.

    And this is the amazing thing about embroidery – you can get as imaginative and creative as you want. No one can tell you that your way to embroidery is wrong.You can use a traditional way or an imaginative way of embroidery.

    However, hand embroidery is pretty hard unless your really talented and don’t need to use a machine. Make sure you have a embroidery kit to a fall embroidery pattern. Imagine being able to create the detail and decal that you want by being able to embroider it right onto whatever item you want. Also, keep in mind that even if you are not very good at hand-embroidery, you can also try an embroidery machine or the embroidery setting on your sewing machine. No one says that an imaginative way of embroidery has to be done by hand anymore! Get as creative as you want with an embroidery machine!

    Whatever you want to have embroidered, you can embroider yourself and you can use whatever imaginative way of embroidery you want! With a little practice, your hand embroidery skills can dramatically improve. Otherwise, you can use an embroidery machine to get the results you’re looking for!
